What happens in your appointment

Your adviser will ask about your income, your deposit or equity, your outgoings and your plans for the next few years. From there they'll explain what's realistically achievable, roughly what it would cost each month, and what the next steps look like.

What to have to hand

• A rough idea of your annual income (and your partner's, if buying together)
• Your deposit amount, or your current mortgage balance and property value
• Any regular commitments — loans, credit cards, car finance, childcare
• Details of any credit issues you know about
